THE GOLDEN YEARS OF AARHUS
The Golden Years Of Aarhus presented eight of Aarhus’ finest, most promising and perspective jazz acts. Curated by connoisseur and Sun Ship man Rasmus Telling Poulsen the limited edition vinyl and two day mini festival showcased the following bands: AddisAbabaBand, Admiral Awesome, Bangin Bülows Nice Jazz Quartet, I Think You’re Awesome, Kasper Staub Trio, Orgel Duo, Ornithopter and Tigers Mind. Every band contributed with a new recording and a great concert.
ORGEL DUO
The duo consists of Daniel Sommer and Simon Eskildsen and is the culmination of the two’s longtime musical friendship and cooperation. Orgel Duo stands for a solid, danceable and not least surprising jazz experience when armed with the organ, synth and drums they invite the listener into their very own musical universe. The boundaries between genres are blurred and the only thing that remains is their immediate communication with each other and the audience.
I THINK YOU'RE AWESOME
What came first - the music or the despair? People are worried about children playing with guns, or watching violent videos - worried that some kind of violent culture will take control over them. Nobody cares about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about deep sorrow, rejection, pain, despair and loss. Did I begin listening to pop music because I was desperate? Or was I distraught because I listened to pop music?
TIGERS MIND
Tigers Mind was formed in SPLAB’s rooms in Mejlgade almost six years ago where they initially called themselves the selfproclaimed terrible name Thomas Eiler Trio. No band sounding like this, had deserved such a dismal band name and with focus on free jazz, electronica and minimalist composition, they found a name worthy of tours in Europe and Japan. In the spring of 2016 they release their second album - the first released through the international label, JVTLand.
ORNITHOPTER
The jazz orchestra Ornithopter has taken its name from an airplane that moves by flapping its wings up and down like a bird. In the same way the orchestra’s sound is characterized by excellent themes that carries the many different improvisations out and back again. The music draws on the legacy of Ornette Coleman among others, but can also give associations to the wild New Orleans parades, that embrace the raw brass sound and use the blues as a base.
ADDISABABABAND
AddisAbabaBand is a 12-13 piece band from Aarhus, who plays intense and swinging afrobeat. The band has been around since 2010 and has played countless concerts in Aarhus and the surrounding area, where the repertoire has gradually been explored and expanded. The music is written collectively which means that the music unfolds like a glowing bastard of everything from free jazz and psychedelic rock to west coast funk and traditional African grooves.
BANGIN' BULOWS NICE JAZZ QUARTET
In just two years BBNJQ has become a celebrated name on the Danish jazz scene - their debut album “BBNJQ” landed them a Danish Music Award as the Best New Danish Jazz Ar-
tist 2014. Despite the band’s short life they’ve toured Norway, Russia and Guinea. The band members see BBNJQ as their very own musical laboratory where talented soloists meet in an almost telepathic interplay. BBNJQ is helping to shape the future of jazz, and is a band to watch out for.
ADMIRAL AWESOME
Admiral Awesome plays the self-invented genre kapow jazz. As the name suggests, kapow jazz is hitting, humorous, massive, swinging, rebellious, straight from the heart, adventurous, beautiful and sentimental. Admiral Awesome is inspired by countless corners of the jazz history and mixes it all in a highly explosive kapow jazz cocktail of quirky ideas. With humor and irony, but also with something at stake they deliver the music with a faithful dedication.
KASPER STAUB TRIO
Over the years the three young musicians in Kasper Staub Trio have come up with their own sound and musical aesthetics. The trio has been compared to everything from Carl Nielsen-ish meekness and Jan Johansson-ish folklore to Paul Bley-ish free jazz, and the trio takes pride in letting compositional and instrumental inspirations go across the conventional genre boundaries. The trio has released two albums “/” (2012) and “Port Plate” (2014).
